On April 20, sophomore Felipe Arenas Gallo brought students from the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program (FWEP), an after-school enrichment program for boys, to Rice University to participate in a College Readiness Day.
Now a yearly tradition between FWEP and Community Bridges interns, the College Readiness Day begins with a tour of Rice’s campus. FWEP students viewed academic buildings and the residential colleges while learning about Rice’s history, and they got the opportunity to pursue their interests in engineering while touring the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen.
In the afternoon, some Rice students joined the FWEP students for a pizza lunch to discuss their college experiences, answer questions, and get to know each other.
The College Readiness Day was a component of Felipe’s final project for Community Bridges: the curriculum for a FWEP course called World Adventures, which encourages students at FWEP to have deeper engagements with cultures and current events in Houston and around the world.
